# Cape Town Day Trips for the Summer: Winelands, Hermanus and Peninsula

by [Nox](https://blog.nox.capetown/blog/author/nox) | Nov 5, 2026

Summer in Cape Town brings long, warm days and some of the Western Cape’s finest scenery within easy reach of the city. Vineyard-lined valleys, penguin colonies, whale-watching coastlines and dramatic mountain roads all sit within a few hours’ drive of the Atlantic Seaboard.

This guide looks at three of the most rewarding day trips from Cape Town, with distances, highlights and practical advice for planning each one.

### In this blog we cover…

- **Why summer suits day trips from Cape Town:** Long daylight hours and settled weather make it easy to fit more into a single day.
- **A Cape Winelands day trip:** Focus on one wine route per day, from Stellenbosch and Franschhoek to Paarl and Somerset West.
- **A Hermanus day trip:** A scenic drive to the Overberg, with cool-climate wineries, coastal walks and wildlife encounters.
- **A Cape Peninsula day trip:** A full loop from Chapman’s Peak Drive to Cape Point, Boulders Beach and the False Bay coast.
- **Tips for planning a summer day trip:** Realistic timings, transport options and what to pack.
- **Frequently asked questions:** Quick answers on drive times, tolls, penguins and more.

## Why Summer Suits Day Trips from Cape Town

![pexels-olly-3779745](https://blog.nox.capetown/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog%20Content/Day%20Trips/pexels-olly-3779745.jpg?width=1280&height=842&name=pexels-olly-3779745.jpg)

The Western Cape enjoys Mediterranean-style summers, which suit vineyard tours, coastal drives and outdoor adventures. Daylight lingers well into the evening, so there is less pressure to turn back early than in winter.

Picnics at wine estates, walks along cliff paths and swims at sheltered beaches all become easier to enjoy at a relaxed pace.

Realistic planning still matters. Game farms in the Western Cape are generally a two to three hour drive from the city, which makes them a stretch for a comfortable day trip.

The Garden Route is also too far to cover in a single day. The three trips below are all manageable from the Atlantic Seaboard and can be done by self-drive or with a reputable tour operator.

## A Cape Winelands Day Trip

The Cape Winelands is made up of several distinct wine routes, and the best approach is to choose one area per day. Tastings, long lunches and scenic stops fill an itinerary quickly.

As a guide, allow about an hour per estate, visit no more than four or five farms, and earmark one of them for lunch.

![pexels-laker-5732810](https://blog.nox.capetown/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog%20Content/Day%20Trips/pexels-laker-5732810.jpg?width=1280&height=853&name=pexels-laker-5732810.jpg)

### Stellenbosch

Located roughly 55 minutes from Cape Town, this historic university town is known for its oak-lined streets and Cape Dutch architecture.

Kanonkop is a good place to try Pinotage, a uniquely South African grape. Spier Wine Estate suits a full day, with picnics, Eagle Encounters and open-air concerts.

![Aaldering Vineyards in Stellenbosch](https://blog.nox.capetown/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog%20Content/Day%20Trips/Aaldering%20Vineyards%20in%20Stellenbosch.jpg?width=1776&height=1185&name=Aaldering%20Vineyards%20in%20Stellenbosch.jpg)

### Franschhoek

Franschhoek is about an hour away and has a reputation as South Africa’s gourmet capital. The Franschhoek Wine Tram lets visitors hop on and off at different estates, while Babylonstoren offers a 3.5 hectare garden, a bakery and a spa alongside its tastings.

The Huguenot Memorial Museum covers the French refugees who shaped the valley’s food and culture.

![A pair of tourists taking in the scenic view of Franschhoek Wine Valley](https://blog.nox.capetown/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog%20Content/Day%20Trips/A%20pair%20of%20tourists%20taking%20in%20the%20scenic%20view%20of%20Franschhoek%20Wine%20Valley.jpg?width=2235&height=1504&name=A%20pair%20of%20tourists%20taking%20in%20the%20scenic%20view%20of%20Franschhoek%20Wine%20Valley.jpg)

### Paarl

Paarl,  also about an hour from the city, is named after the glistening granite outcrops that dominate its skyline. The Afrikaans Language Monument sits against that backdrop.

Paarl suits families particularly well, with goat’s milk cheese at Fairview, alpacas at The Alpaca Loom, and the shops, eateries and chocolatier at Spice Route.

![1750 Cape Dutch style Laborie in Paarl](https://blog.nox.capetown/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog%20Content/Day%20Trips/1750%20Cape%20Dutch%20style%20Laborie%20in%20Paarl.jpg?width=1426&height=896&name=1750%20Cape%20Dutch%20style%20Laborie%20in%20Paarl.jpg)

### Somerset West

Somerset West is about 50 minutes away, at the foot of the Helderberg Mountains. Vergelegen Wine Estate is known for its historic gardens and camphor forest. Strawberry picking at Helderberg Farm is seasonal, running from October to December, which makes early summer a good time to visit.

![pexels-martin-cheung-2851108-4440425](https://blog.nox.capetown/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog%20Content/Day%20Trips/pexels-martin-cheung-2851108-4440425.jpg?width=1280&height=853&name=pexels-martin-cheung-2851108-4440425.jpg)

Further afield, Wellington, Tulbagh, Robertson, Worcester and Montagu sit between roughly 1 hour 20 minutes and two hours from Cape Town. Each has its own terroir, and they reward a longer, slower day.

## A Hermanus Day Trip

Hermanus lies about 120 km from Cape Town and takes between 90 minutes and two hours to reach. Whale season runs from June to November, with sightings most frequent in August and September.

A summer visit may therefore catch the tail end of the season, but the town has plenty to offer year-round.

![Whale Statue in Hermanus](https://blog.nox.capetown/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog%20Content/Day%20Trips/Whale%20Statue%20in%20Hermanus.jpg?width=1702&height=1277&name=Whale%20Statue%20in%20Hermanus.jpg)

### The Drive to Hermanus

There are two main routes. The N2 over Sir Lowry’s Pass offers views across False Bay and passes farm stalls and wine estates.

The R44 Clarence Drive follows the coast through Gordon’s Bay and Rooiels and is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful coastal drives in the world. Allow an extra 30 to 45 minutes if taking the coastal route.

### Hemel-en-Aarde Valley Wineries

The name means “Heaven and Earth”, and the valley is known for cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Creation Wines, Newton Johnson, Ataraxia and Hermanuspietersfontein are among the estates to consider.

The Hermanus Wine Hoppers service offers a hop-on, hop-off option for those who prefer not to drive between tastings.

![Creation WInes Vineyards - Hemel en Aarde Valley](https://blog.nox.capetown/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog%20Content/Day%20Trips/Creation%20WInes%20Vineyards%20-%20Hemel%20en%20Aarde%20Valley.jpg?width=1516&height=1012&name=Creation%20WInes%20Vineyards%20-%20Hemel%20en%20Aarde%20Valley.jpg)

### The Cliff Path and Fernkloof Nature Reserve

The Cliff Path runs for 12 km between New Harbour and Grotto Beach, with benches for watching the bay.

It passes through the Fernkloof Nature Reserve, where colour-coded trails cover 1,800 hectares. Voelklip Beach is a sheltered spot for picnics, and the Hermanus Country Market runs on Saturday mornings.

![The Hermanus Cliff Path](https://blog.nox.capetown/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog%20Content/Day%20Trips/The%20Hermanus%20Cliff%20Path.jpg?width=1364&height=910&name=The%20Hermanus%20Cliff%20Path.jpg)

### Wildlife and Adventure

Gansbaai, nearby, is the base for shark cage diving. Panthera Africa Big Cat Sanctuary in Stanford offers an educational look at big cats, and Arabella Country Estate combines a top ten national golf course with a spa.

The breeze off Walker Bay can be cool even on sunny days, so a light windbreaker is worth packing alongside sunscreen and a hat.

![Dassies in Hermanus](https://blog.nox.capetown/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog%20Content/Day%20Trips/Dassies%20in%20Hermanus.jpg?width=1573&height=1048&name=Dassies%20in%20Hermanus.jpg)

## A Cape Peninsula Day Trip

The Cape Peninsula loop covers more than 100 km through Table Mountain National Park. Allow six to eight hours in total, with around three to four hours of that spent driving.

Setting off at about 08:00 to 08:30 helps to reach Cape Point and Boulders Beach before the tour buses. Most visitors drive clockwise, starting along the Atlantic Seaboard.

![Man driving car smiling](https://blog.nox.capetown/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog%20Content/Day%20Trips/Man%20driving%20car%20smiling.jpg?width=2625&height=1750&name=Man%20driving%20car%20smiling.jpg)

### The Atlantic Seaboard and Hout Bay

The route passes Clifton and Camps Bay before reaching Hout Bay, a working harbour with seafood restaurants and a weekend harbour market. Guided kayak tours from the harbour offer a chance to see seals and seabirds.

![pexels-saumik-samanta-358685249-30017856](https://blog.nox.capetown/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog%20Content/Day%20Trips/pexels-saumik-samanta-358685249-30017856.jpg?width=1280&height=960&name=pexels-saumik-samanta-358685249-30017856.jpg)

### Chapman’s Peak Drive

This 9 km mountain pass has 114 curves cut into the cliffside and is considered one of the most spectacular coastal roads in the world.

It is a toll road that accepts contactless payments, and it can close in high winds or heavy rain. Picnic tables line the route, and the ruins of the Old East Fort make a sheltered sunset spot.

![Chapmans Peak Drive in Cape Town, South Africa](https://blog.nox.capetown/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog%20Content/Day%20Trips/Chapmans%20Peak%20Drive%20in%20Cape%20Town%2c%20South%20Africa.jpg?width=1598&height=899&name=Chapmans%20Peak%20Drive%20in%20Cape%20Town%2c%20South%20Africa.jpg)

### Noordhoek and Scarborough

Noordhoek’s Long Beach stretches for 7 km and is popular with horse riders. Noordhoek Farm Village is a good stop for coffee or lunch, and Cape Point Vineyards produces Sauvignon Blanc in the cool sea air.

![pexels-taryn-elliott-8366059](https://blog.nox.capetown/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog%20Content/Day%20Trips/pexels-taryn-elliott-8366059.jpg?width=1280&height=720&name=pexels-taryn-elliott-8366059.jpg)

### Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope

The reserve covers 7,750 hectares of fynbos and cliffs. The Flying Dutchman Funicular carries visitors up to the old lighthouse, and a boardwalk of about 45 minutes to an hour links Cape Point to the Cape of Good Hope.

![Tourist walking along the boardwalk at Cape Point](https://blog.nox.capetown/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog%20Content/Day%20Trips/Tourist%20walking%20along%20the%20boardwalk%20at%20Cape%20Point.jpg?width=1464&height=1097&name=Tourist%20walking%20along%20the%20boardwalk%20at%20Cape%20Point.jpg)

Cape Point marks the south-western tip of Africa, while the southernmost point of the continent is Cape Agulhas, about 170 km to the east. Baboons are common here, so food should be kept out of sight and car windows closed.

### Boulders Beach and Simon’s Town

Boulders is home to a protected colony of African Penguins, viewed from boardwalks. Early morning (07:00 to 09:00) or late afternoon (after 16:00) tends to be best, and January is a good month to see juvenile penguins moulting on the beach.

A conservation fee applies, so some cash is useful. Simon’s Town adds naval history, including the statue of Just Nuisance in Jubilee Square.

![African Penguins](https://blog.nox.capetown/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog%20Content/Day%20Trips/African%20Penguins.jpg?width=1611&height=1074&name=African%20Penguins.jpg)

### Kalk Bay and Muizenberg

Kalk Bay combines a fishing harbour with antique shops, cafés and the Brass Bell, where waves break against the windows. Muizenberg, the birthplace of surfing in South Africa, is recognisable by its colourful bathing huts.

## Tips for Planning a Summer Day Trip

- **Choose one region per day.** Packing in too many stops is the most common planning mistake.
- **Match the transport to the day.** Self-driving offers flexibility, while tours and private guides remove the need to navigate or stay sober for tastings. City Sightseeing’s hop-on, hop-off bus also covers parts of the Peninsula.
- **Check what a tour includes.** Activities such as shark cage diving, horse riding and quad biking may be charged separately. Tipping a guide is not mandatory but is always appreciated.
- **Start early.** An early departure beats traffic, tour groups and the midday heat.
- **Pack for changing conditions.** Sunscreen, a hat, a light jacket and swimwear cover most scenarios. Binoculars are useful for wildlife.
- **Plan the lunch stop in advance.** At popular estates, booking a table or picnic ahead avoids disappointment.

## Frequently Asked Questions: Day Trips from Cape Town

### What are the best day trips from Cape Town in summer?

The Cape Winelands, Hermanus and the Cape Peninsula are three of the most popular options. Each can be completed in a day from the Atlantic Seaboard, and each offers a different mix of wine, wildlife and coastal scenery.

### How far is the Cape Winelands from Cape Town?

Stellenbosch, Somerset West, Franschhoek and Paarl are all within roughly 50 minutes to an hour’s drive. Towns such as Wellington, Tulbagh, Robertson and Montagu take between about 1 hour 20 minutes and two hours.

### How long does it take to drive from Cape Town to Hermanus?

The drive takes between 90 minutes and two hours, covering about 120 km. The coastal R44 Clarence Drive adds 30 to 45 minutes if time is spent at the viewpoints.

### Can Hermanus be visited outside whale season?

Yes. Whale season runs from June to November, but Hermanus also offers wine tasting in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, hiking in Fernkloof Nature Reserve, shark cage diving in Gansbaai and local markets throughout the year.

### How long does the Cape Peninsula day trip take?

Allow six to eight hours to complete the loop without rushing. The driving itself takes around three to four hours, and the rest is spent at Cape Point, Boulders Beach and a lunch stop.

### How is the toll paid on Chapman’s Peak Drive?

The toll plaza accepts contactless payments by tap-enabled card or mobile wallet, such as Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay. Cash is still accepted, but swipe cards are no longer supported. The road may close in high winds or heavy rain.

### Can the Garden Route be done as a day trip from Cape Town?

The Garden Route is generally too far for a comfortable day trip. A longer stay is better suited to exploring it.

### How many wine farms should be visited in one day?

Four or five at most is a sensible limit, with about an hour at each estate and one of them chosen for lunch.
