Zeitz MOCAA

Housed in the V&A Waterfront, Zeitz MOCAA is a public, not for profit museum dedicated to exhibiting, collecting, preserving and researching contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora. Fifty six historic grain silos were transformed by the UK's Heatherwick Studio in 2017, resulting in a raw concrete structure with distinctive convex windows that rises above the surrounding docklands. Inside, visitors will find nine floors of exhibition space, including a cathedral like central atrium, dedicated centres for costume, photography and moving image, and a rooftop sculpture garden with views across the harbour.

Free guided tours run for an hour each weekday at 12:30pm and can be booked on arrival at the museum's front of house desk. Capacity is limited, so early arrival is recommended.

Norval Foundation

Set in the leafy Tokai area, close to Constantia, the Norval Foundation offers a full day out combining art, architecture and nature. Founded by the Norval family, this internationally recognised museum focuses on contemporary art from the African continent and its diaspora, presented across a series of purpose built galleries.

Iziko South African National Gallery
