What to Pack for a Cape Town Holiday: A Season-by-Season Guide

If you’re planning a visit to Cape Town,  whether it’s your first time or your fifth,  packing can be surprisingly tricky. The city is known for its beauty, beaches, wine farms and mountain trails, but it’s also infamous for fitting all four seasons into a single day. Trust us, even locals get caught out by a sunny morning that turns into a gusty afternoon. So, let’s make sure you’re ready, whatever the weather.

In this blog, we cover:

  • Summer (Dec–Feb): Hot, dry, beach-ready weather (but don’t forget a wind-proof hat)

  • Autumn (Mar–May): Ideal in-between season (perfect for layering and wine farm hopping)

  • Winter (Jun–Aug): Think boots, jumpers, and fireplaces. (Pack for rain, stay for the views)

  • Spring (Sep–Nov): Blooming flowers, warming days, and a mix of everything (pack light layers)

  • Bonus tips: Link to our Cape Town Travel Guide, and why staying with Nox makes it all easier.

First things first: yes, Cape Town really can do four seasons in one day!

Ask any local, and they’ll tell you - we never leave the house without some kind of "just in case" bag. A sun hat, a jersey, a raincoat, maybe even hiking shoes, all in the boot, just in case the day takes a turn (and it usually does). It's part of the charm, and with a bit of planning, it’s easy to embrace.

Summer (December to February)

Think: Hot, dry, and vibrant. Perfect for beach days, wine tastings, and exploring the coastline.

What to Pack:

  • Light, breathable clothing (linen, cotton, shorts, dresses)

  • Swimwear

  • Sun hat and sunglasses

  • High SPF sunscreen

  • Light jacket or pashmina for evenings

  • Flip-flops or sandals

Travel Tip: The “South Easter” (our famous south-easterly wind) can sweep in during summer afternoons. Bring a hair tie and leave the floppy hats at home unless they’re secure.

Best Experiences: Clifton Beaches, sunset picnics on Signal Hill, evening strolls on the Sea Point Promenade.

Autumn (March to May)

Think: Warm days, cooler nights, fewer crowds. Ideal for relaxed, scenic travel.

What to Pack:

  • Layers (t-shirts, long sleeves, light jumpers)

  • Comfortable walking shoes

  • A light scarf or shawl

  • A casual jacket for the evenings

Travel Tip: Autumn is shoulder season in Cape Town, so you’ll enjoy both mild weather and better availability at restaurants and experiences. A perfect time for a last-minute getaway.

Best Experiences: Cape Winelands tours, urban hikes like Lion’s Head, Saturday mornings at Oranjezicht City Market.

Winter (June to August)

Think: Cosy fires, dramatic skies, and the occasional storm. Yes, there’s rain, but also beautiful crisp days.

What to Pack:

  • Waterproof jacket or trench coat

  • Warm layers (wool jumpers, thermal tops, socks)

  • Boots or waterproof shoes

  • Beanies or warm hats

Travel Tip: Don’t let the rain put you off, winter is full of cosy restaurants, moody mountain views, and empty beaches. Many locals love this season for its slower pace and hidden gems.

Best Experiences: Whale watching in Hermanus, spa days in Constantia, dinners and red wine by the fire.

Spring (September to November)

Think: Wildflowers, longer days, and a buzz of anticipation for summer.

What to Pack:

  • Mixed layers (t-shirts, a jumper, a light rain jacket)

  • Comfortable shoes for nature walks

  • Sunglasses and sunscreen — the UV is already strong

  • Light trousers or a dress

Travel Tip: Spring is prime time for West Coast flower spotting or heading to the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens as the season begins to shift.

Best Experiences: Hiking in nature reserves, sipping wine with a view, quiet mornings on empty beaches.
